Ants – 3 Ways to Keep Them Out of Your Kitchen

How to Keep Ants Out of Your Kitchen

Ants are some of the annoying pests that frequent our homes unexpectedly. These pesky tiny insects can take up your home, occupying everywhere, including your kitchen. While ants aren’t the most harmful pests out there, there is something terrible about these tiny insects. They can get into nearly everything in your kitchen, including food containers and pantry, making them among the most problematic pests to deal with. Thankfully, though, there are several ways to keep ants out of your kitchen. These are the three most effective ways to keep these annoying pests from your kitchen.

Get Rid of the Ant’s Food Source

Cleaning away food leftovers and spills is an effective way of keeping ants out of your kitchen. They camp in homes primarily to search for food. If they find food in your kitchen, the next thing you will be glaring at is an ant infestation. Denying these pests their favorite food sources will ultimately keep them out of your kitchen. Besides disposing of food leftovers and cleaning spills, you need to keep your food in sealed plastic containers and plastic bags.

Ants are fond of sweets and starchy foods, such as sugar, cornmeal, and honey. Having spills, splatters, and smears of these food items in your kitchen will attract insects, giving you the arduous task of dealing with an ant infestation. Get rid of food crumbs in the garbage pails and kitchen appliances. The cleaner your kitchen is, the less likely it is for the kitchen to attract ants.

Use Natural Repellents to Deter Ants

Sometimes ants will visit your kitchen regardless of how clean the kitchen is to try their luck whether they will get some tasty food items in the kitchen. Natural repellents will help keep them entirely out of your kitchen because ants loathe repellents. Citrus fruits, chalk, flour, and vinegar make powerful natural ant repellents.

You can use each of these natural repellents in different ways to keep ant infestations at bay. For example, you can draw lines around your home using chalks. Ensure you draw lines at specific entry points. Besides drawing lines with chalks to deter ants from entering your kitchen, you can also crush the chalk and spread the chalk powder around your garden. You can also scatter the chalk powder all over your garden where they could be ant nests.

You can use flour much like chalk powder. Spread some flour at the back of the pantry and all your home’s entryways. Citrus fruits such as oranges and lemons make excellent ant repellents. You can use citrus fruits to deter ants from your kitchen in different ways. For example, squirt some orange or lemon juice around the doors and windows.

Ants use doors and windows as entryways to kitchens. You can also throw a few slices of oranges or lemons around your home. Vinegar is also a potent repellent, and it can help keep annoying ants from your kitchen. To use vinegar as an ant repellent, mix some of it with water and shake the contents thoroughly. Put the mixture in a hand spray bottle and spray it along potential entryways.

Block all The Entry Points

Blocking all the ants’ entry points can help keep these pests from your kitchen. Start with sealing every cranny and nook since they are potential entryways for these tiny pests. Seal all the crevices, cracks, and holes in your kitchen. If you see ants around your home, follow their tail to establish their entry point and seal it. Keep checking for trails around your home because these trails will help you discover the entry points ants are using to enter your home.

One Final Thought

Having an ant infestation in your kitchen can be devastating. Irrespective of how annoying these insects are, you can keep them away from your kitchen if you use the correct preventive measures. Therefore, have proper preventative measures to prevent ants from getting anywhere close to your kitchen.
